It’s having an especially big impact on young girls, among whom identifying as “transgender” or “non-binary” has greatly increased. Schools are then affirming this new identity, and they often do so against parents’ wishes. Therapists are being prevented from doing anything but affirming whatever the child thinks they identify as, and they’re calling it “conversion” therapy if they do so much counseling them not to transition.
There’s a very small percentage of people who have such bad dysphoria that the only thing some doctors believe they can do is to make those people’s bodies look more like the way they want them to, and to have those people “socially transition.” But most of those people have been middle-aged men in the past, not still-developing young people, and not girls. There’s a long history of social contagions among young girls where certain ideas spread like viruses, affecting their mental health in very real ways. But the problem with this virus is that it encourages delusions about bodies that can be irreparably harmed.

Most gender dysphoric people actually don’t do that. But the thing is, even a mangled penis or vagina is still a penis or a vagina. You can’t actually transition from one sex to another, you can only be a man who looks more like a woman or a woman who looks more like a man. And, if we’ve been paying any attention at all to feminists, we should know that the transgender theory of what makes a man or woman is a form of essentialism based on gender stereotypes. It’s why people who “transition” usually go to cartoonish lengths to ape masculinity or femininity.

A sane, but compassionate society would treat this as the real psychiatric problem that this is.
