No idea; the optimist in me thinks it's probably based on historical encounter figures and feedback from big donors about what immigration numbers need to be to sustain their businesses. The pessimist in me thinks it's probably just some numbers pulled out of a hat that they thought would placate both dems and independents.
Maybe there’s some science to it. I sure don’t know. But it gives the GOP an easy reason to kill the bill. By agreeing to it, you’re saying that we’re totally cool with 1.8M illegals entering each year.
I think no matter what the number was (except maybe 1 encounter), the GOP would find a reason to kill it since they don't want to give Biden a win.

Secure the border with the stroke of a pen. Require proof of asylum claims. Allow Texas to secure their own border un-impeded.
Negotiate comprehensive immigration reform. If we get 5000 qualified, ready to work, non criminal immigrants, I am fine with it. But we need law and order. We need to know who is coming into the country. And we need to make sure our communities accepting immigrants have the capacity to add 5000 (Housing and jobs). If we can do those things, then no problem with 5,000 /day.
Why is our immigration policy set by the number of people attempting to violate our laws as opposed to the capacity that we can handle?
Agreed. We also need to streamline this asylum BS. Allow applications at maybe 2 ports of entry on the southern border. To be considered, you must go to one of those ports with sufficient and compelling documentation of your asylum claim. All others denied on the spot and back to where you came from. And those that are allowed to file for asylum, you wait outside of the US until approved.
Put it at 0 and see how fast the big money brokers start bitching. Illegal immigrants are a necessity for our capitalist system, despite your disdain for them. Farm labor, construction, food and bev, etc are all reliant on illegal immigration. Listen to the CATO institute and establish a daily limit and you’ll see benefits.
And before the knuckledraggers come along and say I’m for open borders (I’m not), I’m also not naive enough to think eradicating it completely would be a benefit for our society. There are people much more intelligent than me out there who study this and have probably come up with a formula to determine what the daily influx needs to be for economic balance
It should be 0 until we get it under control. Once we get it under control and have a functioning system we should allow as many was we can reasonably accommodate without negatively impacting our own citizens.
No one cares what the money brokers think. That’s the thing, the two tiered system of justice for the “money brokers” (the left) has to end and order must be restored.
everyone acknowledges we need immigrants. We want it done legally, orderly, and at rate that does not destroy our country.

You’re operating under the assumption that they didn’t already factor in what the US can “reasonably accommodate” with this latest proposal.

You are correct, I doubt they have thought this through at all. However, IF that is the case then sell it to the American people. Tell us that.
As of right now, we see mayors of our major cities, and our border states begging for mercy. So its going to be a tough sell that we can accommodate the current numbers because we aren't doing it right now.
Along with what you noted with labor force impact, there's also a large portion of "illegal immigrants " paying into social security that they'll never see, along with paying taxes of various forms. There's been studies that have shown the negative effect that curtailment of that would have.
I think the border states should be working more cooperatively with the cities they’re shipping the immigrants to. There are plenty of reports of Abbott refusing to cooperate with the blue cities where hes sending the immigrants. Abbott doesn’t want to solve this issue, he wants to exploit it to “own the libs.”
I think if they would retract their status as “sanctuary cities” he would be glad to work with them.
But advertising yourself as a sanctuary city is working directly against the interest of Texas and Abbot.
If they want cooperation they should be cooperative.

We had over 300k enounters in December alone. Just to give you a visual, the max we deployed to Afghanistan at any given time was 100k Troops.

The border should be shut down for years to counter act the damage done. Open up some legal immigration at a future point for educated people with needed skills only. My opinion.
We've released millions into the interior of the country because Biden reversed the asylum policy, title 42, remain in Mexico, etc. 300k encounters means all but about 50 or 60 known criminals or terrorists are allowed to stay until they receive an asylum trial, which has been quoted as 8 years out. We are no longer allowed to send them back.Biden built processing centers in Latin America to help speed up the asylum process and avoid the border all together, how many of those illegals aren't being accounted for in the encounters numbers?

The border was never “opened up”, and to say it was is intellectually dishonest. I’m not outraged at all, I’m just enjoying the GOP crying about the harshest immigration proposal the US has ever seen.
The LNG ban is interesting - we’re already the number 1 exporter of LNG in the world and have an additional 5 LNG export facilities expecting to be finished this year. I don’t have all the details on why they decided to ban it, but my gut tells me it’s not that big of a deal

According to that article, it sounds like border patrol and immigration services need more funding and employees to help curb these issues. Luckily the new Dem immigration proposal addresses these exact things!

How do you know what is in the bill when it hasn't been released yet. Only leaked garbage has been leaked, but no actual bill. If it were really that great, Why won't they release it and try and sell it. And do really think that if it stopped illegal immigration, Biden would enforce it when he has done nothing except sueing Texas to try and keep them from enforcing the flow.
Doesn't seem to matter what's in it because Der Cheetofuhrer has already laid down the law and that means it could be perfect and it won't matter. But we know a lot of what's in it now and it's easy for you to find if you really wanted to, but the main thing we know about it is Biden has pledged to shut down the border the day the bill is signed into law.
We also know it will supply the tools needed to mount a robust campaign against the fentanyl crossing our border. Two things Republicans have been screaming about forever and now we have it. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good and press your party officials to pass it. If not, no more tears from your side.
