Manchin done in WV

Not defending or criticizing him, but it’s an interesting question: How should a senator or congressman weigh the interests of his constituency against broader national questions?

Or to put it another way, are these people elected with the expectation that they’ll vote lockstep with what they think their constituencies would want or that they’ve been trusted to vote for what they think is most sensible in general?

poor manchin, guess he'll just have to survive on the millions of dollars in lobbying money he'll get from the coal industry and other big business he's supported his ~40 years in office

coal is not the future, I think anyone with half a brain understands that. And the coal mine owners have an absolutely ****ing terrible track record for how they treat their employees. Manchin is taking the right stand here.

They "should" represent the interests of the people of their State, period.

I absolutely HATE that politics are "national" now.

another interesting question would be ... Why have a Federal legislative branch at all? The Senate and House were put into place so that the "people" had representatives in DC to represent them. This was done because it would take days or weeks to travel between states or to reach the Capital. With technology nowadays, why cant State legislatures and Governors represent their constituency? We vote for people to represent us and then vote for different people to represent us again .... ?????? why

Just seems horribly inefficient ... and wasteful.

Manchin IS a coal barron.

Coal and Oil are not the future, but they are the present and the immediate future. A switch to renewables too quickly is not possible. It will take time to build out the infrastructure supply the demand that will be required.

Not a fan of Gov getting in the way. The switch will come over an appropriate time frame and be driven by market demand.
