If the embezzlement is as far reaching as some have implied then I can see why they are spending so much time on this.
I personally think that SLED knows beyond a reasonable doubt that Alex was behind the murders. They have to be tight lipped to make sure nothing comes out that he can create a defense for. They are making sure they have an ironclad case because they know what they are going up against.
