Any one see Ed Oliver acting like

Not a good look for both parties if you ask me. However, if a coach took a jacket off me I would be pissed too. He committed to Herman who bailed for Texas. Weird situation to be in. I hope Oliver shows out next week regardless and puts any naysayers to bed. I'd would still take a 350lb healthy Dexter over him though in the draft. He's the Fridge with a better work ethic... for his time.

Even recognizing that people see through orange colored glasses, I can’t believe that some think Wilkins or Lawrence are better than Oliver. It’s not even remotely debatable. There isn’t a single scout/GM/executive who would entertain the thought of that, let alone agree.
I think it’s debatabke between Lawrence and Oliver. Very much so.

Did you not watch the video? People don’t care about him not playing but the disrespect and selfishness he showed in the video is EXTREMELY concerning.

That episode just cost him a bunch of money!! Should have worn a Power Ranger layer for the cold.

I would say more college players than not don’t love their college coaches. There’s not a lot of Dabo’s out there. A college coach is a means to an end, point blank. Especially at that level.

The coach literally physically strips a jacket off someone who was an All American and has done that University a huge service.

Am I saying Oliver was right? No. But, if I’m a NFL franchise that wants Aaron Donald 2.0 and knows as professionals I won’t be stripping a jacket off a player during a game, would I pass on this kid? Hell no!
Matter of opinions...but Gary, Wilkins, Dex all have better size and possibly a better teammate

Last night wasn’t about talent or not

Anyone that wants to argue that Oliver was in the right, you’re just wrong, if you don’t understand it, i can’t help you.

This is cut and dry, just because Oliver decided to play at Houston doesn’t make him greater than his 84 teammates. He knew he couldn’t wear it if he didn’t play, he was asked to take it off...he didn’t listen, he thought he was better than his brothers playing...well he isn’t... Oliver needs to get over it...act like a teammate and not a selfish talent.

At least the HC had the nuts to finally go up to him to take it off after he did not listen 2 times. Oliver got his feelings hurt on national tv...he will live, if he can’t get over it...he will be Bell 2.0 not Wilkins 2.0

For the record I’m not denying he isnt talented or won’t make a great nfl player, but just because HE chose to play at a lesser program doesn’t give him the right to break the rules and wear a limited number jacket because he is talent...screw that...i don’t want that as a teammate or a player...

Have you ever seen him play? Everybody here loves Wilkins and Lawrence but Ed Oliver is a step above.

I have seen him play...he has a great motor and is unstoppable against East Carolina, Temple, USF, Rice, Tulsa, Navy, Arizona, and Texas Tech. Stop me if you aren't getting the picture. He was a one man wrecking crew against Louisville a few years ago, a game that really made his name nationally. I do agree he will be drafted very, very high( top 10) but I don't agree he is going to automatically be an All-Pro. There is just not enough data points against very good competition to determine how is skill matches up with the best.

Major Applewhite is trying to coach a game and his 50 td QB just went down on a non contact injury. But instead of coaching up his true freshman backup qb or any other normal game day task he has to help get Ed to take his jacket off. And of course Ed is throwing a tantrum while he is literally in the way as a conscientious observer.

How would Nick Saban or Dabo have handled this situation? Would Ed have pulled the same shit with them?

As others have said, clearly this had been building up. Punk Bitch is dead on.

Good coach?

And you’re letting another guy physically strip a jacket off of you in cold without saying anything back? I would question who the punk bitch is
It wasn't another player who started taking it off him, it was the damn HC! A position of authority. Big difference there IMO. And striping it off him or yanking it off him as @spskillz said is sensationalizing it to say the least.

Something like this makes me real thankful for the program and players Dabo is building and has built. You think something like this would happen on the sideline during a game with our program? I just think our players have a little more respect for their fellow teammates and coaches, whether or not they “like” them.

Oliver has been on the team for 3 years. I have a hard time believing he didn’t know the jacket rule in place. So I’m thinking he knew from the get go who those jackets are reserved for.

So you stop playing for the year and still think starter rules apply to you? Nah, sorry man. Respect the other guys who are still playing and don’t put the jacket on in the first place and force a coach to have to come say something instead of coaching the team.

Because his players are standing around in short sleeves. I’m sure he wants them to stay loose. It’s not like they are going to throw on a sweatsuit. Meanwhile you got a dude with a sweatsuit on and a big jacket on top. It’s annoying how people are just unaware or just don’t care.
It’s almost like some people are looking for a reason to be offended.

A punk bitch? Houston has a limited number of over sized coats that are reserved for players that are playing (he is not, despite looking completely fine during warm ups) and he grabbed one and wore it for apparently a little while during the second quarter. Major Applewhite saw this and told him to take it the fvck off...A comment that Oliver apparently didn't care for

Lets do the math

More than half of coaches are not good coaches

Only a quarter of kids on scholly start when most think they should

<1% of these kids go pro when the majority wants to be a pro

The HC has literally over a hundred kids on his team, so it’s impossible to get remotely close to please anywhere close to all of them

But somehow most high level college athletes don’t view their coaches as a means to the end and simply adores their coaches?

Do you not remember how several high profile players had KBs back and threw shade on the program not that long ago? You are vastly overestimating 18-21 year olds and holding them to grown men standards

Great made up math there. “More than half the coaches are not good coaches”

I love made up stats. They are so awesome.

Respect is earned thru many things, but fundamentally thru humility. Respect can’t be taken or demanded. Oliver looked like he felt “disrespected”; whichnin todays young males appears to be the unforgivable sin. Oliver choosing not to play is debatable on its merits, but I don’t think it’s debatable that he made that choice out of self preservation - a form of self above team. And none of us know what else is going on in the locker room.

Oliver was cutting it up on the field pregame. And his mere presence could have been distracting and disruptive to the rest of the team.

Further speculation, Applewhite in hindsight wishes he would have manned up and said to Oliver either play or withdraw from all team activities, but felt hamstring because of his star status. This is what happens when you over value someone for their contributions versus their relative position in a widely accepted hierarchy of authority. Just like my opening statement, Applewhite has to earn the respect by leading consistently, and domestrsting that team comes before individual, regardless of all-American status. Last night it was already too late to try to establish that.

He’s better than both. Also better than Gary as well

There is much more than talent alone that aids in the decision as to where in the NFL draft a prospect is taken. Character is certainly one of the factors. I was not at the game last night, and have no evidence other than the "bad look" Ed Oliver gave on T.V. last night about his character. However, There are a couple of red flags that stand out to me.

1. If you can play while receiving a scholarship ($$$) then play, don't sit out while someone with less "talent" tries his best to help his teammates.

2. That was for sure a bad look last night between Ed Oliver and the Head Coach. Something like that can easily turn into something that tears the team apart. Once the team is divided, "talent doesn't matter. You just want the cause of the division gone...

I am so happy we have a Head Coach named Dabo, who has made all the right decisions to keep such a division away for Clemson Football...

He lost NFL money with that stunt.

Started taking it off him yes, but not yanking it off him as you just stated. Face it the player was wrong to have it on in the first place and then wrong to argue with HC and coaching staff member.

JAMCRACKER99 gets it, this is all about "discipline and character" something so many of the young talented young men today don't have...

True, but can you at least admit that going all "tough guy" on your head coach is way out of line? Doesn't matter if he's an All American or a walk-on, that's no excuse. He's still a 21 year old kid

That's your opinion. Not fvcking fact. Playing in a BS conference like the American. Give me a freaking break. That, sir, is MY opinion.

I wish I could say I’m surprised that so many people here are so misinformed.

Wait until the combine. Dexter and Christian will both show out with measurables as good or better than Oliver. Both of them are bigger with elite speed and agility for their size. Oliver may end up going ahead of one or both of them, but it’s not written in stone.

Wilkins is a top 3 Tiger player ever in my book, along with DW4 and Spiller.

Dex is a freak.

But there’s a reason why people who are paid to do this for a living has Oliver scouted as the top DT.
Are you talking about the same people who rated Blaine Gabbert, Jake Locker, Paxton Lynch, Tim Tebow, Christian Hackenberg, Brandon Weeden, & other muppets as 1st round QBs?

What measurables? They weigh more?

It’s truly amazing to see the differences between age and culture represented in this thread.

A great microcosm of America currently.

If I’m an NFL GM and I need a DT and both Lawrence and Oliver are available. I choose Lawrence. Oliver looked small when beside Applewhite! Also he looked wimpy needing a jacket on top of sweats when the coach is wearing much less. He then shows is lack of ability to work through something with any sort of maturity.

All these things matter.

Also this is just my opinion. Like everyone else in this thread I have no idea what preceded this video and where Oliver ends up getting drafted!

LOL

That dude will be a pro bowler in a couple years.

Do I think he should play if healthy? Yes

Is he a “punk bitch” bc he didn’t suit up for an unranked team to preserve his health in a meaningless game when he’s not paid now and is 2 games away from millions? No

Is McCaffrey and Fournette and Clowney and Bosa regretting preserving their bodies right now? No
You are simply wrong.

He’s a quitter on his team. How you look at him as anything other than selfish with no ounce of loyalty is beyond me. He would not have been on the sideline if I were the coach.

You don’t think Dabo would have done the same? Hell he made a punter run back into the field and then run off instead of walking. Applewhite has a commitment to the team and Oliver obviously doesn’t.
I don’t get how people don’t see this. It really shocks me on a message board for sports that there is this disconnect on this subject.

The whole thing was dumb, they made it a point to go and take the jacket off of him. Why does Applewhite give a shit?
Yah wtf . have your players back, always. Its his decision and his life, you have to Back his play.
