No. Just look at PA, IL and NY. A very specific area (Philly, Chicago and NYC) dictates the politics of the entire state. People who live very different lives, have different values and want different leadership being controlled by voters in a single metro.
This is a glimpse into what would happen nationally without the electoral college. People living a wonderful life in Mt. Pleasant, SC being subjected to high federal taxes, government overreach, etc. No thank you.
Our country's model of government wasn't established to allow for mob rule (simple majority). That's how you get people voting to just take money from producers and reallocate it to themselves (this already happens by losers in the D base). We need a shield against this sort of thing. The electoral college and equal state representation in the Senate protect us from mob rule.
It's all a moot point anyways. I think you need a constitutional amendment ratified by 3/4 of the states to change it. That's never happening, so the discussion isn't anything more than pointless whining.
