Dan Wolken

when HIV / Aids rules and practices apply the same to COVID-19, we'll know people are being sincere and not just pushing dogma for reasons they don't admit.

Good people can disagree about what "prudent" and "considerate" looks like. Let's be prudent and considerate about COVID the same way we agree to move forward in the presence of HIV risk.

If we're gonna rigorously pursue contact tracing, confinement of the well rather than the especially vulnerable and the carriers, then do it for AIDS too. Until we have even-handed rules, the rest of the self-righteous pandemic porn is just insincere bullying and posturing.

I kinda think it definitely is. Virtually no one is dying or getting really sick in this age range no matter your weight or other conditions. Dan is for sure trying to incite fear and be contrarian to get hits. I don’t see how you can see it any other way.

Dan must be a lot different in person cause I see a lot of media defend him a lot. It’s pretty obvious he’s just trying to troll and get people riled up with most things he writes.

Did you read the article?

Did you read the article?

I did. And the questions asked aren’t any different than the questions that could be asked about those same kids getting pneumonia, the regular flu, heart disease etc. Schools should be and will be prepared and have done a ton of work behind the scenes I’m sure to make sure their athletes are safe.

I have no doubt in my mind clemson cares more about its offensive lineman then Dan Wolken does and will do everything they can to keep them safe. Just think the article was unnecessary and accomplished what he wanted. To stir up controversy.

I’m just saying if he wrote more from both sides of things and not just about the crazy 1% chance this happens like the world isn’t filled with risk as is.

I think if someone like you who writes great stuff from all sides and perspectives I’d be able to take it more seriously. Wolken is just always doom and gloom it feels.

But, now that we have some data to ponder, let's not act like it's the ebola virus

My problem is not with those who act like its the ebola virus but those who act like there is no virus. Apparently, wearing a mask is just asking too much of some people. But damn if they refuse to wear a mask are they also refusing to wash their hands? Sometimes I forget my mask. If I have to go in to the store, I at least try to give everyone a wide berth. Some of these people come up on me like Kyle Busch(too soon?). I ain't paranoid but I ain't for unnecessary risk either.

No one wants anyone to die of anything but we have to live life and open up businesses so people aren’t having to rely on the government.

Out of curiosity, where do you live? To which businesses are you referring? Not trying pick a fight just looking for some clarity. Here in the low-country lots of things up and running. It might not be the old norm. However, it might be the new norm.

He quoted a wide array of experts on the topic. None of what they said struck me as outrageous or even close to it.

I hear ya. Understand about people getting in your grill.

yes it is absolutely a ridiculous article and click bait. Par for the course for most sportswriters like wolken, Dennis dodd, and Peter king. You have a higher chance of dying in a multitude of ways vs corona if you are under the age of 65, especially under 40 and especially under 25.

. You are right. However, I am not going to throw caution to the wind. Maybe, I am getting soft. I have definitely become more risk-averse with each addition to my family.

I do find it somewhat concerning that the players, who will be most exposed physically and financially(scholarships), have little bargaining power. Now, I am sure most Power 5 programs will do what they can to protect their product. They have the resources to do so. The smaller programs not so much.

This is so incredibly dumb. You can’t just make something up based on what you believe and say “it’s the truth”.

Stop it, you lack the ability to formulate your own thoughts and instead parrot Fox News idiots.

You don’t know me and anyone that does will tell you that your comment is the furthest thing from the truth. I wish there hadn’t been ANY deaths from this, it’s incredibly sad that imbeciles like you act like COVID-19’s not a big deal when it clearly is BECAUSE of the loss of life, among other things. So when you say I or anyone else is “rooting” for it, it’s not only wrong, it’s disgusting. If nothing else, it seems like people like you don’t care about those who have died because you’re more concerned with the politics of it all if that’s what all these other idiots keep telling you is what’s important.

You get up in arms about someone taking YOUR God’s “name in vein” yet you make comments like that you hypocrite.
Lol, the second the election is over you quit caring about the China virus. You aren’t fooling anyone, you know dragging this out is the only possible path to victory for Democrats. A lot of people are shocked to see liberals pulling for a virus so they can gain power, me, I expected it. It was never about keeping people from getting it, in time EVERYONE will be exposed, no matter what anyone does. It was always about flattening the curve so hospitals would have the space and resources to treat the sick.

Saying democrats are rooting for plague is about as honest as saying republicans are rooting for war.

Your worldview is so ****ed up.

Your worldview is so ****ed up.
Liberals didn’t even try to mask it, they did EXACTLY what people predicted they would do. That explains why you didn’t waste many keystrokes showing how off base I am.

Why are people so scared of Democrats? My grandfather was one. He was a pretty good dude. Played college fb. Flew 150 combat missions in Vietnam. Ran a successful business looked out for his fellow man. Loved that man. I won’t bore you with his resume but the guy did all right. My father never knew how he voted More important to him that I treated all with respect. He told me I could pick my friends and I could pick my nose but don’t pick my friends nose. That was His way of saying I’m not gonna tell you who to hang out with but don’t let their problems become my problems.

the Democratic Party isn’t the same any longer. It is the radical left. They hate America. Doesn’t seem like your grandfather did by any means

Jesus. No we don't.

I'm sorry that you think this way.

What are you even talking about?

What does the Democratic Party stand for then?

I'm happy to have this conversation in a real way, but I need you first to agree that we don't stand for "hating america" first. Otherwise I'm wasting my and your time.

I truly believe that a large portion of the vocal Democratic Party of today hates the ideals we were founded on. They want total upheaval to form this liberal utopian vision that is against a democratic, capitalist society that I fully support including individual liberties. Hell I am dumbfounded how the current governments at all levels have gotten away with the lockdowns and shuttering of businesses and places of worship like we have seen on both sides. It’s asinine. All I have seen out of liberals lately is defending illegal immigrants, supporting chaos, and wasting time and money on investigations such as Russia and the Brett Kavanaugh hearings.

Says the guy who thinks the hundred + million people who identify as a democrat "hate america".

That's hate too.

That number is getting lower by the day due to the current values of the Democratic Party. They are the party of race baiting, hate, and violence.

Wasn't long ago when people said republicans were chasing DNA on a blue dress, suppressing votes, looking for WMDs, and taking payoffs from Saudis.

Not many of us are going to agree on what the ideal America is. However, no one should be persecuted for wanting a better America. This country is far from perfect. Much can be done. Sacrifices will have to be made. Those who claim that this violates the ideals of the founding fathers are far from being in the know. Well, unless they were there of course.

1. The founding fathers were pro-slavery.
2. Some very much wanted another monarchy.
3. Some preferred an agricultural utopia.
4. Others preferred to march toward Manufacturing.
5. Hell, there was even a debate over whether or not a National Bank was constitutional.

This country was founded on compromise. The founding fathers were so aware of their own imperfections that they created a living constitution that could be amended and adapted for instances such as war, economic collapse, and perhaps pandemics.

Universal health care should be a goal.
A living wage should be an idea.
An economy free from monopolies.
A judicial system that is open and transparent.
A strong defense.
An inclusive election where all citizens can have their vote counted. (the more citizens that vote the harder to skew/corrupt the results. Ask the mathematicians not the politicians.)
An anti-fragile infrastructure that can withstand national emergencies.
A left lane free from loiters driving the speed limit.

All these seem like no-brainers. No, it ain't gonna be cheap. Some of us will have to bear an inequitable burden to make such things happen. But guess what else is expensive, riots, pandemics, wars to name a few. If someone is in favor of stopping domestic terrorism than pay to prevent those conditions from arising.

For politicians, lobbyists and big business to sit back to protect the status quo is abominable. For us to act like sheep and let them continue with their bullshit is asinine. Please notice, I didn't say republican or democrats. I said politicians, in particular, those at the national level. Their job is change or improvement. Unfortunately, their quest is reelection.

This community as many is full of passionate people. I wish they would direct their passion to the polls and not at stupid editorialists. I am certain that most of this board can sit down have a sweet tea, an arnold palmer, an IPA, a High Life and find some common ground. At the very least is hoping for a better world for your kids and dogs. Cats are just fine on their own. with that I am going to go finish cutting the grass on hopes that my roommate(wife) will give me my balls back. Gentlemen, ladies, Tiger Fans, I bid the adieu.

P.S. Talked with my cohorts on the City of Charleston Police Dept. Last night was a freebie. Some knuckleheads ruined it for everyone. Tonight its on like donkey kong.
